City passenger boats may lift fares Aug 1

Passenger boat operators in Bangkok plan to raise fares by 50 satang to one baht on Aug 1.

Chavalit Methayapraphas, president of the Thai Boats Association and the operator of passenger boats in the Saen Saep canal, yesterday said passenger boat operators have told the Marine Department they will lift fares on Aug 1.
The committee overseeing passenger boat services, chaired by Marine Department chief Thawanrat Onsira, will have the final say on the boat fare increase proposal.
The committee earlier allowed fares to be raised from June 20. However, the cabinet asked the operators to postpone the increments.
The operators complied with the request but proposed that fares be lifted from Aug 1 onward.
If approved by the committee, the fares of passenger boats in the Chao Phraya river and the Saen Saep canal will rise by one baht and those of ferries in the Sathon, Si Phraya and Phra Samut Jedi areas will increase by 50 satang
